Bamboo Multipurpose Hall

Panaghiusa Multipurpose Hall unites over 100 households of displaced flood survivors in Dumaguete City, Philippines. It serves as a cultural landmark and community space for meetings, celebrations, training and education. Innovating upon traditional bamboo construction, the building showcases locally sourced materials in a modern way. The Philippines has over 30 different bamboo native species. Raw materials like botong (bamboo structure), bagakay (bamboo screens), amakon (woven grass), sak-sak (thatched roofing), and terracotta clay flooring were sourced within miles of the site. Anna served as a visiting design-build instructor at Foundation University’s School of Architecture establishing the first Filipino student-led design-build studio, Estudio Damgo (2012 - 2015). The Multipurpose Hall is the second design-build project completed by the fifth-year Filipino architecture students, led by Anna Koosmann. Estudio Damgo has been successfully operating for more than a decade with 14 community projects completed.
