Bio-Based Materials

Bio-based materials, or “nature’s plastics”, are alternatives to synthetic and petrochemical building products. Derived from renewable natural resources, they support healthier indoor environments, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to a more regenerative and sustainable future.

Our Commitment

A + w o r k s is committed to reducing toxic and harmful chemicals on every project through rigorous approach and careful material sourcing. We collaborate with builders and suppliers who share these values, specifying bio-based materials and durable systems that contribute to healthier, more comfortable environments for both people and the planet.

  • Renewable & Recycled

Highly renewable, bamboo is harvested within 2 to 3 years, hemp and straw within months. Wood byproducts are often sourced from sustainably harvested forests, offcuts, and recycled materials, supporting a more circular economy.

  • Naturally Breathable Assemblies

Many bio-based wall systems are vapor-open and hygroscopic, absorbing excess moisture during humid periods and releasing it during drier conditions. This regulates indoor humidity for healthier indoor air quality.

  • Carbon Sequestration

Bio-based materials absorb and store carbon dioxide as they grow, reducing CO2 levels while supporting regenerative practices. Lime plaster hardens overtime, and reabsorbs CO2 from the atmosphere creating durable, breathable finishes lasting for decades.

  • Thermal, Acoustic, & EMF Performance

Thick natural wall systems provide high insulation values, superior sound absorption, and a quieter, calmer indoor environment. Hemp-lime also reduces electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures from wi-fi and other frequencies.

  • Soil & Agriculture

Hemp is ideal for crop rotation because it returns nutrients to the soil, suppresses weeds, and improves diversity. The roots absorb toxic chemicals, useful for bioremediation and restoring brownfield sites.

  • Durable, Mold, Pest & Fire Resistance

When properly detailed and maintained, natural buildings can last for generations while aging gracefully over time.
Hemp-lime assemblies are naturally resistant to mold, pests, and fire due to the mineral properties of lime used as the binder and plaster.

  • Healthier Indoor Environments

Bio-based materials reduce reliance on petrochemicals and other toxic products in conventional construction. This creates healthier indoor environments for occupants for overall wellbeing and comfort.
